Skin cancer impacts millions of people each year in the US, but it can usually be effectively treated if caught early. Mohs surgery is the most effective option for treating most cases of skin cancer – it has been used for decades with a high rate of success. Unfortunately, Mohs surgery does require removing the affected skin and tissue cells, which can cause a deformity. At Eden Plastic Surgery Institute, we offer Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction at our clinic in Miami.

Mohs surgery is simplistic and effective in removing skin cancer cells and stopping the spread of this deadly disease. The main skin lesion is removed through an incision, then thin slices of tissue around the lesion are removed and examined under a microscope to look for any remaining cancer cells. This process continues, removing layer after layer, until no cancer cells remain. Since many skin cancer lesions occur on the face, this can leave a hole where skin and tissue were removed, disfiguring the face.

Facial Reconstruction After Mohs Surgery

Once the Mohs surgery is performed, a secondary procedure can be completed to replace lost skin and tissue. Dr. Ali Charafeddine is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon that has trained at top medical facilities, like the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, learning the best techniques to reconstruct and reshape facial tissue and features. Using tissue and skin grafting, as well as plastic surgery artistry, Dr. Charafeddine can reform the damaged facial areas after Mohs surgery to restore the natural facial appearance of the patient.
